【Connecting Toritsu-Daigaku — The Next 100 Years, With Our Children】
On October 5, I had the privilege of visiting Bethel Kindergarten, just a 30-second walk from my clinic(笑), and meeting Rev. Yoshihiko Watanabe, pastor of Kakinokizaka Church and principal of Bethel Kindergarten.
I had the opportunity to introduce our project commemorating the 100th anniversary of Toritsu-Daigaku Station and to talk about how we might connect the next generation with the history and future of our community.
Rev. Watanabe was incredibly warm and gentle, and our 35-minute conversation was truly a calming and inspiring time.
I have been working in the Toritsu-Daigaku area for more than 16 years.
Sixteen years ago, I never imagined that one day I would be visiting a kindergarten principal to discuss the future of our neighborhood as chair of a station centennial committee.
Life certainly takes unexpected turns.
Rev. Watanabe kindly said,
“So, you are serving as the chair of the executive committee… I see.”
I may be reading too much into the pause, but I took it as a warm vote of encouragement.
I also shared a little story from my own childhood.
I graduated from the kindergarten of Koen Girls’ Academy, where we used to pray before lunch:
“Our Father in heaven… Amen.”
Apparently, I became a little too enthusiastic in sharing my kindergarten memories.
Rev. Watanabe then kindly invited me:
“If you like, please come and join us for Sunday worship sometime.”
Koen is Catholic, while Bethel and Kakinokizaka Church are Protestant.
Different traditions, perhaps, but childhood memories of kindergarten can stay with us for a lifetime.
Our conversation also gave me an important perspective for the centennial project.
We should not simply ask children to “do something” for the 100th anniversary.
Instead, we should listen to what they want to do, respect their age and development, and let ideas emerge naturally from their everyday lives.
That feels especially important for our theme:
“Connecting Toritsu-Daigaku — The Next 100 Years, With Our Children.”
Kakinokizaka Church began its history in 1936, and the church still has historical records documenting its journey.
The history of our station and community.
The people who built the past 100 years.
And the children who will shape the next 100.
Our goal is not simply to preserve history.
It is to pass it on.
To connect people, generations, memories, and hopes for the future.
Thank you very much, Rev. Watanabe, for your valuable time and thoughtful conversation.
I look forward to seeing what kind of natural and joyful connection may emerge from the children themselves.
