Tokyo to Aizu: A One-Day Journey on the Tadami Line|Vol. 2/7
Tuesday, October 13th

Vol. 2|Tsuruga Castle, Aizu-Wakamatsu & the Journey Ahead! 🚃🏯
Tokyo to Aizu: A One-Day Journey on the Tadami Line|Vol. 2/7
Tuesday, October 13th
The Limited Express Revaty Aizu No. 101 arrived at Aizu-Wakamatsu Station at 10:59 a.m., about eight minutes behind schedule.
First things first: lunch! I enjoyed a bowl of Aizu mountain-salt ramen. 🍜
The salt, known as yama-shio, is made by boiling down the hot spring water of Oshio-Urabandai Onsen in the Urabandai area. It is said to contain minerals other than sodium as well.
The clear broth had a delicate, rich flavor and a wonderfully clean finish. Absolutely delicious!
I finished lunch at 11:30 a.m. My train on the Tadami Line was scheduled to depart at 1:05 p.m., leaving me about 80 minutes to explore, allowing time to return to the station.
“Since I’ve come all the way to Aizu-Wakamatsu, I really want to see Tsuruga Castle!”
So I asked generative AI for advice.
Its response?
“Considering the round trip and sightseeing time, visiting the castle may be difficult. Perhaps save it for your next trip.”
Talk about a salty response—right after mountain-salt ramen! 😂
But I’m a triathlete, after all. I figured I could make it work: 35 minutes each way, plus 10 minutes at the castle.
Challenge accepted! 🏃♂️💨
And the result? Success!
The castle’s brilliant white walls against a perfectly clear, cloudless blue sky made for a breathtaking view. Even though my visit was brief, it was absolutely worth the effort.
To make the moment even more memorable, a kind German woman offered to take my photo. It’s always lovely when a small act of kindness becomes part of a travel memory. 📸
🏯 A little about Tsuruga Castle
Tsuruga Castle, also known as Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle, is a symbol of Aizu with a history stretching back around 630 years. During the Boshin War of 1868, it withstood a fierce siege lasting about a month.
The current castle keep was reconstructed in 1965. In 2011, its roof was restored with red tiles to recreate its appearance at the end of the Edo period. It is known as Japan’s only castle keep with a red-tiled roof.
I didn’t have enough time to explore the museum inside the keep, so that’s something to look forward to on my next visit!

At around 12:45 p.m., I made it back to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station right on schedule!
I picked up drinks and a few supplies at a nearby supermarket, preparing for the next adventure: a 4-hour-and-42-minute train journey on the Tadami Line. 😂
Now, the main event of the day begins…
All aboard for the Tadami Line! 🚃⛰️✨
